Cuddled amongst fever trees in the shadow of Mount Kenya, the brand-new Sanctuary Tambarare, opened June 2022, and in Laikipia delivers the perfect balance of adventure and serenity. Sanctuary Tambarare means ‘ the plains’ in Swahili, looks out across the grassy plateau of the award-winning Ol Pejeta Conservancy 90,000 acres of un-spoilt African landscape, where the Big Five roam, including the last two northern white rhinos on earth.

Sanctuary Olonana (Masai Mara)

Sanctuary Olonana is an extraordinary luxury safari lodge on a private stretch of the Mara River in the heart of Kenya’s most famous game reserve, the Masai Mara. The lodge at the foot of the impressive Siria Escarpment close to where the famous last scene from “Out of Africa” was filmed.

The lodge presents 14 glass-sided suites, Sanctuary Olonana is inspired by the Masai Mara’s breathtaking natural wonders, an abundance of wildlife, and a dramatic river that runs right past its forest setting. Sanctuary Olonana Activities

Game Drives

At Sanctuary Olonana, game viewing will start from the camp. You will also be able to see a pod of hippos living permanently in the river just below camp and many other species come to drink there. The experienced guides of Sanctuary Olonana will take you to all the hidden spots and plus our customized open safari vehicles offer all-round views, allowing for excellent photography opportunities. The Mara’s rich eco – system includes acacia-studded savannah, riparian forest and woodland which attract more than 300 bird species and a stunning variety of animal life all year round.

Cultural Visit to Maasai Village

Meet and appreciate the vibrant and still traditional way of life of the Maasai. You also learn about the medicinal plants that grow here, the importance of cattle and the stages of life through which all Maasai pass, from young boy or girl to respect elder. Go along with by an experienced Maasai guide you are invited to visit the village which is built along traditional lines; complete with cattle enclosure, outer palisade and mud and cow dung huts.

Encounter the elders, their wives and families and learn about the social structure of the homestead, the role of women in their society and many more aspects of their daily life. Interchange and discussion is encouraged, so whether the ladies are building a hut, the warriors are dancing or making fire with stones and sticks, guests are free to join in.

Visit to a school

Hot Air Balloon Safari

With hot air balloon safari, it is a fantastic experience and exhilarating feeling to watch the sunrise in the Kenya from a hot air balloon. The balloon lands around one hour after taking off with breakfast being prepared nearby. The delicious smells of bacon, sausages and eggs drift on the breeze as you begin breakfast with platefuls of exotic Kenyan fruits and homemade pastries and, of course, glasses of bubbly to toast your flight.

Tanzania Sanctuary Retries

Tanzania is a country with epic topography, with its three safari circuits, the country is one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations. The popular Northern circuit embraces bucket-list landmarks such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Mt Kilimanjaro. Repeat visitors might prefer the remote wilderness vibe of the Southern or Western circuits. For some beach time, the ‘Spice Island’ of Zanzibar is only a short flight away.

Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp

This is the camp where you can sleep while on a safari in Serengeti National Park. Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp is a classic tented safari camp in the Serengeti. This traditional safari camp will move around and follow the migration ensuring guests are able to view the migration all year round. The beautiful Serengeti National Park is renowned for the famous annual wildebeest migration, with over one and a half million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras.

Serengeti National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and covers around 5,700 square miles of grassland plains, savannah as well as forest and woodlands. This park contains a variety of wild-life, including the “Big Five.” There are also many cheetahs to be seen, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, hyena, impala and even the elusive African wild dog.

How to get there

Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp is a moveable camp based on the natural migration path. Sanctuary Kichakani will be open reopen in the Northern Serengeti from 01st June 2024 – 14th November 2024. Access by road is also possible and the camp is approximately three hours from the Ngorongoro Crater and seven hours from Arusha. For light aircraft, luggage is limited to 15kg in one soft bag.

Classic Campaign Tents

This camp offers accommodation under canvas with 10 new five-star tents, all of which have been styled with distinction. Each tent has a wooden deck perfect for pausing for a just-brewed cup of Tanzania’s finest coffee, and en-suite bathrooms feature authentic bucket showers. A personal tent attendant is available around the clock to fill each bucket shower to the perfect temperature.

Canopy Community

In addition to the new cultured private tents, the camp also features a grand central canopied area where the main tent flows into lounges and dining wings. Game Drives

This camp offers exciting game drives to guest. Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp’s location is based on the natural migration path offering unbeatable wildlife viewing. The stars of this seasonal path are wildebeest, zebra, Thomson’s gazelles, and the predators that this migratory journey attracts. The Serengeti is known for having the Big Five; cheetahs are a highlight, along with wild dog, giraffe, water buck and impala.

Sun downers

Sun downers are a must do on any safari, and the perfect way to end the day and take some time to enjoy the magnificent sunsets of Africa. Enjoy a refreshing drink or a signature cocktail as you celebrate the end of the day; all while being surrounded by thousands of wildebeest and zebras.

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and it is based on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, close to the access road into the crater, with spectacular views of the crater rim valley and surrounds.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 180 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera.

A large diversity of animals resides in the crater, including an extraordinary population of predators, such as lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the elusive leopard; as well as hippo, wildebeest, warthog, zebra, eland, buffalo, gazelles and water buck.

How to get there

This camp is accessible by road and air from Arusha into Manyara Airstrip. Our Sanctuary guide will meet you at the airstrip and transfer you to the camp. Transfer from the airstrip to the camp is 2.5 hours to camp.

Classic safari Tents

This camp offers ten classic safari tents each with its own en-suite bathroom. The tents also feature hairdryers and plug points and a small sitting area in front of each of the tents where early morning coffee and biscuits can be enjoyed before starting the day of incredible game viewing. The main common areas include a dining area, bar area and lounge area as well as comfortable sofas placed in specially-selected locations around the camp.

Activities

Game drives at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp

You can enjoy fascinating game drives led by highly qualified guides in closed 4×4 game viewing vehicles. Game drives are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon in the Ngorongoro crater and on the rim. At Crater, it is a single entry, game drives can be conducted only once in the crater per day. An optional game drive in Lake Manyara National Park is available as an extension of the transfer between Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp and the Lake Manyara Airport, so that is an additional cost and depending on flight times.

Cultural Activities

There are also cultural activities to enjoy by guests in a nearby Masai village. There is an additional entrance fee of $50 per vehicle, maximum 6 guests, and payable to the village.

Sanctuary Swala Camp Tarangire

Sanctuary Swala is located in a hidden area of Tarangire National Park arguably northern Tanzania’s most interesting park; famous for the large herds of elephants and spectacular baobab trees.

The Park’s name originates from the Tarangire River that crosses through the park. The landscape and vegetation are incredibly diverse and the hilly landscape is dotted with many Baobab trees, high grasses and dense bush. Huge herds of up to 300 elephants roam the national park while migratory wildebeest, zebra, impala, buffalo and eland crowd the lagoon and waterholes. The Tarangire is also home to the more unusual species of fringe-eared Oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk.

How to get there

Tarangire is serviced by roads and is only 115 kilometers from Arusha. From the entrance of the park, it is another 67 kilometers to Sanctuary Swala. The road winds through the park and offers some spectacular game viewing en route. Kuro airstrip is approximately a 45-minute drive from Sanctuary Swala.

Accommodation

This camp is located in a sheltered part of Tarangire National Park and has twelve luxurious canvas pavilions, all shaded by acacia trees and all with views over the waterhole and plains in front of camp. The main dining area, deck and library are lifted on stilts around an ancient baobab tree.

Contemporary African

Sanctuary Swala’s welcoming communal spaces blend chic style with relaxed open-air living. Set on stilts around ancient towering baobab trees, the elevated dining area, lounge and library, are sound-tracked by the sing-song of the hundreds of species of birds that have their home in the mature acacia trees’ canopy – ornithologists say that 23 are exclusively endemic to this corner of the world.

All of the delicious meals served at Sanctuary Swala are enjoyed on the main dining deck and ancient baobab tree. A full English and continental breakfast are served before your morning game viewing activity. Lunch can be enjoyed back in camp. There are many favourite spots to go to for a quiet lunch in the bush or for special sun downers – toasting to the end of yet another beautiful day in Africa.

Delectable dessert

Evens you can enjoy drinks around the campfire; followed by a three-course plated dinner as you discuss the great game viewings and events of the day. The camp’s signature dish and a definite favourite amongst guests is our mouth-watering dessert called “Chocolate Kilimanjaro.” It resembles the white snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. If you are celebrating a special occasion, there can be an arranged a private dinner under the stars on your tent deck.

Hot Air Balloon Safari

Your balloon is escalated against the first rays of sunshine and once aloft floats gently over the Tarangire National Park.  You can look down upon towering baobab trees and spot leopards and herds of elephants from the sky. The balloon flight time is around one hour, with a delicious breakfast including bacon, sausages, eggs and pastries awaiting you upon landing. (This comes up with an Additional cost)

Games Drives

This camp is at the heart of Tarangire National Park, where Northern Tanzania’s largest population of elephant makes its home, as does a rare white giraffe. Drives out from Sanctuary Swala reward you with exciting wildlife encounters, while herds of elephant, and prides of lions all roam within sight and earshot of the camp. The low volume of visitors to the park offers a truly unique and private experience and our customized open safari vehicles offer unobstructed viewing and great photography opportunities.

Bush Breakfasts, Picnics and Dinners

You can decide with your guide to take a picnic breakfast or lunch with you but equally lovely in the evening is to enjoy a bush dinner. A delicious clearing is prepared for a traditional East African meal in the middle of the Tarangire bush. Walking safaris

With walking safari, put on your walking shoes and experience beautiful Tarangire National Park from a different way with a walking safari at Sanctuary Swala. With our professional walking guide and armed ranger, guests can now explore the grassland around camp in one of the most secluded areas of the park. On this walk, you can come across zebra, water buck, impala, ostrich, elephant as well as a number of birds. Sanctuary Swala is one of only a few camps within Tanzania’s Northern Park that is able to offer walking safaris.

Game Drives at Night

Come and encounter the wonders of a safari at night in Tarangire. As dusk falls, relax in the comfort of Sanctuary Swala’s customized safari vehicle as you drive into the park transformed by night. Search for nocturnal animals rarely seen as this is one of the few places in northern Tanzania where you can enjoy a safari by moonlight. With specialized lighting you will be able to look for lion and hyena, as well as smaller creatures such as spotted genet, serval, bat eared foxes, owls and night jars. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp Uganda

After a wildlife safari in Kenya Sanctuary camps, you can also visit Uganda for a gorilla trekking safari sleeping in Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. This camp is set on a flat ridge, deep within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in a remote and atmospheric mountain sanctuary. This is the only accommodation located within the national park, the camp boasts an unrivalled location with exceptional wildlife and bird life viewing opportunities. Activities

Gorilla trekking

Remember gorillas are completely wild animals but they have become used to seeing a few humans after years of habituation. Expert guides have been involved in this process since the beginning and are able to explain the complicated etiquette involved in meeting a giant silverback. This is an opportunity afforded only to a select few, as just eight visitors are allowed to view each group every day.

Tracking through dense forest with steep slopes means that participants do need to be physically fit to enjoy the track. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend a maximum of one hour with them before returning back to camp. Please note only children aged 15 and above can track gorilla. A tracking permit must be bought in advance.

Batwa Tribe Experience

Interact and learn about the Batwa People. This is a full day activity which involves a three-hour walk followed by about an hour spent with the Batwa. The walk back to camp is two hours. The visit includes a music performance, visitation by the goddess, hunting and gathering demonstration and an opportunity to see how they live. The Twa tribe who are also known as the Batwa are the oldest inhabitants of the Great Lakes region of Central Africa.

They speak the same language as the Hutu and Tutsi groups of Rwanda. Like most of the tribes in Africa, they have moved from place to place and are now found in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and eastern portions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Community and Philanthropy Tour

Bwindi is surrounded on the Buhoma side by the Bakiga community and the Batwa people community. This tour takes 3 to 4 hours and begins with a stroll through a small tea farming project. Here you can stop to meet the tea pickers and perhaps even learn how to pluck tea leaves along the way.

Then after you can learn about the camp’s philanthropy initiatives and visit the Bwindi Women’s Bicycle Enterprise and the Bead Making Project. Continue your walk to meet the Batwa People, witness their musical goddess-visitation-inspired performances, learning about their rich culture and listen to their animated stories. Complete your tour with a visit to the Ebeneezer Nursery and Primary School followed by the Bwindi Community Hospital and Nursing School, learning about how the hospital was started and the work they do for the community people.

Birding Walks

On this safari in Bwindi, you still do bird walks. This park boasts over 350 bird species, including 24 that are endemic to these highlands straddling Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo – the so-called the “Albertine Rift Endemics”. For keen birders, we can arrange for a local expert to guide you on a fascinating 2-3 hour walk through the park.

Forest Walk

You can do forest walks in Bwindi and come across forest animals like the rare forest elephants, giant forest hogs and eleven kinds of primates, such as red tailed and blue monkeys, black and white colobus, baboons and chimpanzees. You can also find forest duiker antelopes, bush buck antelopes and over 200 species of butterflies.

They can still offer a guided forest walk on the Munyaga waterfall trail. This trail starts from the park office and ends at the magnificent Munyaga waterfall. The walk to and from the waterfall takes about three hours and is a good way to practice or cool down a day before or after the gorilla tracking.

Queen Elizabeth National Park drives

While staying at Gorilla Forest Camp guests are able to set out on game drives to Ishasha, located in the south of the well-known Queen Elizabeth National Park popular for its tree climbing lions, savanna elephants, buffaloes, topi, hippos, various bird species, warthogs and the occasional leopard.

This Ishasha Sector is also famous for its population of tree-climbing lions. The Lions are normally seen lazily lying within the branches of the huge fig trees staring down at the numerous Uganda Kobs grazing in the open Ishasha plains. This is usually a full day outing where guests are able to stop for lunch at the hippo pool. Departure is 6:30 in the morning.
